Learn More about Phnom Penh

Located in the south of the country, Phnom Penh, the capital, still bears the scars of several decades of armed conflict, but its charm is real. The whole area next to the Royal Palace, on the Mekong River, is particularly pleasant and is undergoing major renovation. Some monuments of the Royal Palace are closed to the public. The Silver Pagoda, named after its floor covered with more than 5,000 silver slabs weighing one kilo each, is a jewel, a spectacular testimony to the wealth of Khmer civilisation. Also worth seeing: the very lively central market area and the large adjacent boulevards where a number of beautiful colonial houses still stand, the "Russian market" district, as well as the Vat Phnom. According to legend, Wat Phnom is the hill topped by a beautiful temple that symbolises the founding of the city six centuries ago. If there was one thing Phnom Penh could sell in large quantities, it would be massages. Although you have to be careful when choosing your massage parlour, you can't really go wrong with finding good prices. Salons and spas are much cheaper than in France, but be careful when choosing your massage - in this case, traditional may not be the best option, as 'traditional massages' are extremely painful. Bodia Spa is one of the top recommendations if you want a full body massage, or for a slightly different experience, head to Seeing Hands massage parlour - they employ blind masseurs and have a very good reputation as well as being a great source of income for blind masseurs who would otherwise be out of work. Although it is now a vibrant and colourful city, Phnom Penh's recent past is very different. Challenging at times, but well worth a visit: the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek execution camps. The former, although not particularly well laid out, gives you an introduction to the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime which killed thousands during its four years in power. Skulls are packed into lockers, along with creepy torture devices and pictures. It's not the most enjoyable visit but it's one of the only ways to learn about the city's all too recent past. Be careful when buying souvenirs from the museum shops - most of the branded or 'vintage' items are fake. About 16 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, you can find the Choeung Ek execution camps, where the Khmer Rouge killed many of the regime's victims. The place is commemorated by a small Buddhist stupa, a religious monument, holding thousands of skulls, as well as the sites of mass graves that were found in 1979. Again, this is a dark and shocking place and visitors are asked to wear long sleeves and trousers as a mark of respect.
